Urban living means constant exposure to traffic, smoke, and industrial pollution. But indoor air is often 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air (EPA), and we spend 90% of our time indoors. Common indoor pollutants include:
- Dust, pet dander, mold
- Off-gassing furniture, cleaning chemicals
- Gas stoves and heaters
- Poor ventilation and high humidity
- Tobacco smoke
Who’s Most at Risk?
- Children breathe faster and have developing lungs — they absorb more pollution per breath.
- Older adults and those with asthma, heart disease, or COPD are more vulnerable.
Health effects may include:
- Long-term respiratory damage
- Chronic cough or wheezing
- Asthma attacks
- Fatigue, headaches
- Poor sleep
What We Test For — And Why It Matters
- PM2.5 – Fine smoke and exhaust particles → Linked to asthma, heart disease, and lung inflammation
- PM10 – Dust, pollen, mold, pet dander → Causes allergic reactions, sinus and respiratory problems
- Formaldehyde – Formaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant and a known carcinogen. It is widely used in various industrial and household products. Found in furniture, flooring, cleaning products → Can cause irritation, headaches, and is linked to cancer
- VOC – Volatile Organic Compounds, and it refers to organic chemicals that readily evaporate at room temperature. They are often found in products like paints, solvents, adhesives, and cleaning products. These compounds, often released as gases or vapors, can come from various sources like building materials, furniture, cleaning products, and even human activities. Exposure to high TVOC levels can cause various health issues like eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and in some cases, more severe problems like liver or kidney damage as well as central nervous system.
- Humidity – Too much leads to mold, mites, and breathing issues → Aggravates asthma and allergies
