DIY: Checking Your Broken HVAC

If your house isn’t staying warm the way it’s supposed to, then your HVAC is acting up. Before you call the pros in to fix it, try diagnosing the problem yourself. Some HVAC problems are easily fixed.  Check your HVAC for these two factors:

-Check the thermostat and make sure it’s actually on. Move the temperature up or down and wait about an hour before noting any changes. There can be fail-safes such as timers that go off and are preventing your heat from acting the way you thought it would.

-Check breakers at your main panel. When your HVAC isn’t working, the circuit panel may be to play. Somebody may have accidently flipped the switch to off. Check that the switch is on and that everything else looks right before you resort to calling a repairman.
